This National Park is one that you have to really want to get to, as it is in the far western area of North Dakota. I had camped there as a teenager with my parents, and was looking forward to my return, as I was going to be camping in the same campground where I had pitched our 10x10 tent over forty years ago. The Park has two units, the South and North, and is unusual in this respect. Both have varying landscapes and wildlife to include bison and wild horses, of which I saw and photographed two in the early morning one day. I also encountered a small rattlesnake when walking down the paved path from the most distant overlook in the North Unit. Actually, there are no "small" rattlesnakes from my perspective! I gave way, turned around, retraced my steps, and returned to my car by a different route, all the while with my tripod at the ready. As soon as I had backed up a few feet, the intimidating rattle subsided. The history of this Park is most interesting as our former President for whom the Park is named spent considerable time in this area of the "badlands" of North Dakota.
