Description
This barred owl (Strix varia) was first sighted by a fellow photographer as it swooped down just over my head, with my friend's yelling to me, while we were shooting in St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, Florida. I ducked and then proceeded to shoot this well-fed looking owl as it perched in a nearby tree. While virtually all other eastern owls have yellow eyes, the barred owl has large, deepset, brown ones. It is best known for its distinctive call, which lead many to call it the "hoot owl." Its wingspan may grow to just over four feet, as it swoops silently through the forest looking for food.
