Description
This image was captured in blizzard conditions in January 2016 during a "Winter in Yellowstone" workshop. After the snow coach in which I was riding turned on a service road to the north of the Old Faithful Visitor Center and parked, I then walked, with others in my group, through deep snow and a snow "downpour" to set up tripods on the Continental Divide Trail. I was looking to the north toward the Upper Geyser Basin at this small herd of American bison (Bison bison). Buffalo is a misnomer, as Europeans, when first seeing these animals, apparently called them buffalos, as these immense animals reminded them of water buffalos, so the story goes. Fortunately, I was well dressed and layered up for this opportunity. However, viewing the bison in these circumstances gave new meaning to the word, "stoic."
