Description
On September 21, 2016, I traveled by helicopter with a group of photographers, and several others accompanying our group, from the Bar 10 Ranch in the Whitmore Valley of the Arizona Strip, where we had spent the previous night, to the Colorado River. The weather was marginal, so our capable helicopter pilot, Mandy, engaged in a bit of what we used to call "scud running" in the Air Force, staying below the low hanging clouds while keeping the ground always in sight. During our short trip south down the valley, the rain persisted.
As we crested the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Mandy hit the "DOWN" button on our elevator, and we banked left, as we descended over two thousand feet along the near vertical wall of the Grand Canyon. It sure felt good to be pulling more than 1G. For all who were still half asleep before we crossed the rim, they were awake at that moment!
As Mandy held a steady descent heading up the river, she set up for a tight right banked turn across the Colorado River and set up for the short approach to what I named "LZ (landing zone) Colorado." I captured this image after my group of six had disembarked the chopper, it had returned to the Bar 10 for another group, and then made its approach to the LZ for the fifth time that morning.
It was a gorgeous welcome to the Grand Canyon's floor with the great sounds of the river surging by us and the two rafts that awaited our group.
