Description
After stopping at a rest area with another photographer in Yellowstone National Park, this sizable elk (Cervus elaphus) came out of the woods and crossed the road. My friend and I then walked down into the woods to the right of the field that the elk had entered. Much to our surprise, it worked its way over to our position for a closer view of this beautiful animal and its impressive horns. A bull may weigh in at 700 pounds and stand five feet high at the shoulder. I think that this specimen filled those squares. This bull's horns had a significant amount of a thick, fuzzy coating of skin, which is called "velvet." This image was captured in July, just a month before most bulls begin to scrape the velvet off in order to sharpen their horns. (Source: National Park Service)
