This "painting" originated from an image captured on my iPhone 7 Plus. It has been said "Necessity is the mother of invention." If that is the case, then creativity must be the offspring of boredom. While sitting down and viewing a recent football game in which my favored team was doing poorly, I opted for applying a number of edits to my image versus throwing things at my TV.
The net result was what I initially called "Photographic Art," transitioning an image into art that resembles a painting, a watercolor, oil, or other format. I have subsequently called this art form "Shibui Photography."
While the world may not be ready for my interpretive photographic art, I know that my third grade art teacher would have loved this.
Don Mercer is an author and freelance fine art photographer. Research for one book took him to the middle of Cambodia in 1999, as he was the first from among his wartime unit to return to that country. During the War in Southeast Asia - known to most as the Vietnam War, he flew over two hundred combat missions as an Air Force pilot in the Cessna O-2A. His combat assignment was as a Forward Air Controller, or FAC. The majority of his combat missions were flown in Cambodia at night. While in Southeast Asia in 1970-71, his interest in photography intensified with the purchase of his first two of numerous Nikon cameras.
