When camping at above 7,000 feet in Great Basin National Park in March, I had scouted an area that provided a beautiful vantage point to shoot a sunrise. After experiencing some snow during the night, I rose early, drove to a slightly lower altitude, and then walked to the spot. However, the storm had brought with it an abundance of clouds; so I was not going to see the sun as it rose in the east across the Great Basin.
However, the morning was crisp and beautiful; so I chose to remain at this scenic spot for most of an hour. The wait paid off, as the sun's rays, what many call God's rays, began to poke though small openings in the cloud cover. The scene that unfolded was breathtaking.
Don Mercer is an author and freelance fine art photographer. Research for one book took him to the middle of Cambodia in 1999, as he was the first from among his wartime unit to return to that country. During the War in Southeast Asia - known to most as the Vietnam War, he flew over two hundred combat missions as an Air Force pilot in the Cessna O-2A. His combat assignment was as a Forward Air Controller, or FAC. The majority of his combat missions were flown in Cambodia at night. While in Southeast Asia in 1970-71, his interest in photography intensified with the purchase of his first two of numerous Nikon cameras.
