I have always wanted to visit Yellowstone National Park in winter in hopes of capturing some bison braving the harsh winter conditions there. In January 2016, I was fortunate to be on such a trip with two close friends and fellow photographers. While the temperatures were downright cold - as in, the morning that we departed West Yellowstone to drive to the Tetons, it was -26 degrees. Llayering up did the trick, and we were off each day to shoot landscapes, geysers, and wildlife, which was abundant - bison, elk, wolves, coyotes, and even a bobcat that posed nicely for us. Taking snow coaches through the Park was a new adventure. The trip was nothing short of spectacular.
Don Mercer is an author and freelance fine art photographer. Research for one book took him to the middle of Cambodia in 1999, as he was the first from among his wartime unit to return to that country. During the War in Southeast Asia - known to most as the Vietnam War, he flew over two hundred combat missions as an Air Force pilot in the Cessna O-2A. His combat assignment was as a Forward Air Controller, or FAC. The majority of his combat missions were flown in Cambodia at night. While in Southeast Asia in 1970-71, his interest in photography intensified with the purchase of his first two of numerous Nikon cameras.
