This image was captured on my September 2016 trip to Arizona that was taken in order to white water raft down the Colorado River through part of Grand Canyon National Park with a group mostly comprised of other photographers. After departing by bus from a hotel in Las Vegas, we rode by motor coach to the Boulder City Airport, after which our group was flown in several general aviation aircraft to the Bar 10 Ranch where we participated in afternoon and evening activities, together with some in the morning on the following day.
This image was taken shortly after our arrival, with a helicopter sitting on the lower of the two helipads used at the ranch, after just having returned from the depths of the Canyon to carry a number of tourists at the conclusion of their river trip up to the Bar 10. This view is looking from the lodge south across the Whitmore Valley, toward the rugged walls of the Grand Canyon, seen in the background on what was mostly an overcast afternoon.
Don Mercer is an author and freelance fine art photographer. Research for one book took him to the middle of Cambodia in 1999, as he was the first from among his wartime unit to return to that country. During the War in Southeast Asia - known to most as the Vietnam War, he flew over two hundred combat missions as an Air Force pilot in the Cessna O-2A. His combat assignment was as a Forward Air Controller, or FAC. The majority of his combat missions were flown in Cambodia at night. While in Southeast Asia in 1970-71, his interest in photography intensified with the purchase of his first two of numerous Nikon cameras.
