Description
Mesquite Flat Dunes is an easily accessible expanse of sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley National Park, California. When traveling with two friends, who are excellent photographers, in March 2015, we arose just past 3 AM and drove to the parking lot for these dunes. Then we hiked into the dunes for well over a mile to be in position to capture sunrise images with soft shadows cast on the dunes. Walking in sand provided more than sufficient exercise for a morning's workout. The only drawbacks to these dunes' being so accessible are that there are millions of footprints running to and fro across this area. Additionally, unless you want to be on top of the tallest dunes, you have to accept that a photographer or two may be in your composition. Of course, that adds some scale, as with the two captured in this image, both near the center of the image vertically, with one to the far left and the other, just a small dot, closer to the center. The sunrise there was spectacular, and the soft shadows were well worth the hike.
