Description
When I rode over to Isle Royale National Park on the ferry trip of just over three hours from Copper Harbor, Michigan, I had the good fortune to sit with a man from the UP - Upper Peninsula - of Michigan who was accompanied by his nephew, a man on leave from the Navy. They were both very interesting and made my trip all the more enjoyable, although I love being on the water.
I briefly discussed my interest in photography and my personal project of photographing all 59 of our National Parks. Thus, it came as no surprise when I ran into the man the next day on the island, and he told me of a trail through some trees near the Rock Harbor Lodge that led out onto some large rocks and afforded a great vista for sunrise. He showed me a few images on his cell phone that he had taken that morning, and they were beautiful.
After hiking more than a few miles around the island later that day, I headed to bed, and arose well before dawn. I then walked to the appointed trail, walked through some trees and underbrush, and found a position on the large rocks from which I would shoot the morning's sunrise.
Just as the sun was about to appear, the man came walking out onto the rocks, and we both enjoyed seeing the other. There is just no substitute for gaining local area knowledge. And it is always wonderful to make new acquaintances along life's highways and byways.
