Description
In photography, there is little substitute for the two elements noted in this image's title when attempting to achieve good wildlife images. Of course, one exception is having a 500mm or larger lens when you are holding a camera body with a 70-300mm lens. But I have learned to work with what I have in hand, as best I can. After getting my second cup of coffee and heading for my sun room on January 25, 2018, I spotted this beautiful specimen of a great blue heron (Ardea herodias), which had flown into the finger of Lake Trant that crosses my backyard.I stepped outside with camera in hand and rounded a corner of my house, putting the heron in my line of sight. And, as in combat, when they're in range, you're in range. So, I took a few steps toward the heron, snapped a few shots, and waited a minute or so. Then, I took a few more steps, as in "Walk, Shoot, Wait, Repeat."With much surprise, this heron, over the course of ten minutes or more, allowed me to get within twenty feet of it, which is not the usual case. I stood for another few minutes with my camera to my face, as it was inevitable that it would take flight shortly. The result for my efforts was a nice series of images showing the heron in various stages of launch mode and then heading away from me. What a grand way to start my day!
