Description
The great blue heron (Ardea herodias) is a large bird, often seen wading in shallow water in search of a meal, a hapless fish, snake, or other source that may come swimming by. They give new definition to stalking their prey. This one was sighted early one morning with the image captured from my backyard looking onto a finger of Lake Trant in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in February 2017. The water on the lake that morning was about as still as it gets, making for a nice reflection. As with mallards and cormorants seen this year, herons and egrets are making an appearance in numbers more than just a few, which is occurring earlier this year than is usually the case.
