Description
Charles Darwin once called the male magnificent frigate bird (fregata magnificens) the "condor of the ocean." When courting a female, the male appears to puff out its chest; but the bird is using its gular sac, which is a bright red, when used, and appears as if a balloon was being inflated. After our group landed at Baltra, we were taken by boat for the brief trip to North Seymour Island. We hiked over some of the island, much of the time amongst numerous frigate birds, at times with nests no more than six feet off our trail.
