Early one afternoon when the sunlight was too harsh to shoot, I scouted the rocks below Pemaquid Point Lighthouse on the rocky coast of Maine. I was hoping to find a tidal pool in order to return later and capture a nice reflection of the lighthouse and associated buildings. After climbing over the rocks from one end of the park to the other, I located a nice tidal pool that I thought would suit my purposes.
Later that afternoon, I returned and set up my tripod low just behind the tidal pool, less than two feet above the rocks. As the light softened with the setting sun, I was able to capture the reflecton that I had hoped to obtain.
Don Mercer is an author and freelance fine art photographer. Research for one book took him to the middle of Cambodia in 1999, as he was the first from among his wartime unit to return to that country. During the War in Southeast Asia - known to most as the Vietnam War, he flew over two hundred combat missions as an Air Force pilot in the Cessna O-2A. His combat assignment was as a Forward Air Controller, or FAC. The majority of his combat missions were flown in Cambodia at night. While in Southeast Asia in 1970-71, his interest in photography intensified with the purchase of his first two of numerous Nikon cameras.
