Description
On a photo safari to Africa, the second camp our group stayed at was Pom Pom Camp in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. On one of the afternoon game drives, our guide picked up some lion tracks, which we slowly followed through the bush. After some slow going, we came upon a pride of lions complete with two impressive mails, a large female, and several cubs.
The males were doing what males of any species do best ... lying around and taking it all in. To both my surprise and delayed delight, our driver turned off the engine on our vehicle once we were well positioned to photograph some of the lions.
One of the males, whether tired or wanting to express some dominance and intimidation, after a few minutes, threw his head back and opened wide to show us his teeth. From my seat to this lion was perhaps all of twenty feet, although it felt less than ten feet.
The engine was shut down in order to minimize vibrations to better capture images. With several vertical rails attached from the body to the top of our open sided vehicle, I could easily imagine that we were in a zoo, with the great difference being that our small group was behind the bars!
