Artist's Description
I seldom shoot an image of a person, but I made an exception on this beautiful morning. I was the first to arrive at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Maine well before dawn, so I began to shoot some nightscapes that transitioned into the blue hour and twilight. At one point, I turned to see an elderly man in the distance walking onto the grounds and heading toward a lone bench from which he could view the sunrise, as it rose above the Atlantic Ocean. I quietly wondered if this was part of his daily ritual. In any event, I worked other areas around the lighthouse until just before sunrise, as I wanted to get a backlit image of this man's sitting and taking it all in, yet making sure that I did not disturb him. He may as well have been sitting in the only pew in his private church.
About Don Mercer
Don Mercer is an author and freelance fine art photographer. Research for one book took him to the middle of Cambodia in 1999, as he was the first from among his wartime unit to return to that country. During the War in Southeast Asia - known to most as the Vietnam War, he flew over two hundred combat missions as an Air Force pilot in the Cessna O-2A. His combat assignment was as a Forward Air Controller, or FAC. The majority of his combat missions were flown in Cambodia at night. While in Southeast Asia in 1970-71, his interest in photography intensified with the purchase of his first two of numerous Nikon cameras.
