This cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), was seen when on a photo safari in September 2017 on the Masai Mara in Kenya. That trip rates among my top five ever taken, as each morning, especially in the Masai Mara, our group got up, had coffee and breakfast, and climbed into our four vehicles, rolling human cages as they were, and headed out onto the savanna.
Once out of the trees that surrounded our encampment, we were amazed every day to see thousands, no doubt tens of thousands, of different animals: elephants; lions; cheetahs; leopards; zebras; giraffes; and more. If fact, I photographed more than 25 different species of mammals on this trip and over 70 species of birds.
With respect to this particular cheetah, it had come close to our vehicle and was captured using a 300mm lens. My initial focus when this beauty came into view was on its teeth, and then my view moved to the "thousand-yard stare" eyes, followed by taking in all those spots. Don Mercer is an author and freelance fine art photographer. Research for one book took him to the middle of Cambodia in 1999, as he was the first from among his wartime unit to return to that country. During the War in Southeast Asia - known to most as the Vietnam War, he flew over two hundred combat missions as an Air Force pilot in the Cessna O-2A. His combat assignment was as a Forward Air Controller, or FAC. The majority of his combat missions were flown in Cambodia at night. While in Southeast Asia in 1970-71, his interest in photography intensified with the purchase of his first two of numerous Nikon cameras.
