Description
When returning to my campsite one morning after shooting the sunrise and then driving around the 36-mile loop road in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, I encountered a small herd of bison milling on both sides of the narrow road, with a few crossing back and forth. I always drive with my point & shoot camera - in this instance, a Nikon AW110 - hung around my neck for just such opportunities when managing more professional gear is not practical.
After sitting still for close to thirty minutes, when an opening appeared ahead, I inched forward in my luxury camper, a BMW 325Ci, with the passenger side window rolled down, as there was this huge bison on my right side just off the pavement. You see, I carry my Coleman 9x7 tent, air mattress, sleeping bag, and other accessories in my car. As I came even with this animal, which then had its head down grazing, I began shooting.
Once he raised his head, a look of astonishment appeared with his eye wide open. With that look, I am confident that my eyes got quite a bit larger, too. I instantaneously decided that I had enough images and eased away, all the while hoping that this intimidating bull did not mistake my small blue car with its black convertible top for an interested female!
