Artist's Description
On September 21, 2016, I traveled by helicopter with a group of photographers, and several others accompanying our group, from the Bar 10 Ranch in the Whitmore Valley of the Arizona Strip, where we had spent the previous night, to the Colorado River. The weather was marginal, so our capable helicopter pilot, Mandy, engaged in a bit of what we used to call "scud running" in the Air Force, staying below the low hanging clouds while keeping the ground always in sight. During our short trip south down the valley, the rain persisted.
As we crested the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Mandy hit the "DOWN" button on our elevator, and we banked left, as we descended over two thousand feet along the near vertical wall of the Grand Canyon. It sure felt good to be pulling more than 1G. For all who were still half asleep before we crossed the rim, they were awake at that moment!

About Don Mercer
Don Mercer is an author and freelance fine art photographer. Research for one book took him to the middle of Cambodia in 1999, as he was the first from among his wartime unit to return to that country. During the War in Southeast Asia - known to most as the Vietnam War, he flew over two hundred combat missions as an Air Force pilot in the Cessna O-2A. His combat assignment was as a Forward Air Controller, or FAC. The majority of his combat missions were flown in Cambodia at night. While in Southeast Asia in 1970-71, his interest in photography intensified with the purchase of his first two of numerous Nikon cameras.
