Description
While shooting for a week in Death Valley National Park during March 2015, two friends and I visited Artist's Palette one day and then decided to return when better light was available. We did so just before 5 PM on a subsequent afternoon, as the sun lowered on the western horizon, with this formation's facing mostly to the west, which made for some soft shadows. This canyon is cut into the Black Mountains within the Park and the varied coloration results from the effects of oxidation on deposits of different metals in this area. "Iron produces red, pink, and yellow, ... mica produces green, and manganese produces purple." (Source: Wikipedia)
