Description
The vermillion flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus) is a small, but beautiful bird. This male, with its bright vermillion coloration, was a real challenge to shoot, even using a Nikon 200-500mm lens that I had borrowed from a friend and fellow photographer who was on a trip with four of us shooting in the panhandle of Florida in February 2016. This image was captured at ISO 2500, f/6.3, and 1/2500 second using a Nikon D7100. One of the photographers on our trip recommended his version of photographic "trap shooting" for this small bird due to its selecting a number of perches in an area, with its habit every few minutes of launching to catch its meal and then returning to one of several trees from time to time. The idea is to set up on a tripod and manually focus on one of the limbs that the flycatcher frequents. Once you determine that the bird is heading to that branch, you begin firing the shutter release in quick bursts in hopes that an image or two may be acceptable. Of course, digital photography makes this all possible with the ability to instantly view (chimp) your LCD screen. I was elated when I captured this image.
