Description
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in western Colorado provides magnificent views from the canyon's rim of the two thousand foot drop to the river. It is sheer drop in places and, in others with some degree of bank, this will probably only prolong a person's drop to the bottom. Twelve miles out of the forty-eight miles of the Gunnison River's canyon are within the Park. The Black Canyon came by its name due to the steepness of its canyon walls that makes sunlight's penetrating to the river difficult for all but a few hours each day.
