Description
After shooting sunset from the shoreline with some old pilings jutting into Apalachee Bay, Florida, one evening in early January 2015, I remained a bit while watching a brown pelican (Pelacanus occidentalis) get in some practice landings. Actually, it would take off and dive for an appetizer, and then circle around the pilings before entering its approach to final.
Interestingly, the royal terns (Thalasseus maximus) remained sitting on the pilings, as spectators, throughout this fifteen-minute series of flybys before the pelican flew off to some other destination. The pelican was definitely not going hungry this night!
As twilight was turning into night with the fading light in the western sky, I shot this at 500mm, ISO 3200, f/6.3, 0 EV, and 1/1600 second, all of which was challenging using such a long lens in these conditions.
