Description
This hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) was seen when taking a boat ride on the Chobe River while staying in Kasane, Botswana, in June 2011. This animal's name comes from ancient Greek and means "river horse." It gives new meaning to the word: huge. The hippopotamus is noted as the animal in Africa responsible for the greatest number of human deaths each year. These animals are very aggressive; and their "yawning" is thought by many to be a sign of impending aggression, their way of threatening intruders. This image was published in my article, "An African Photo Safari," which appeared in the Photographic Society of America's "PSA Journal" in April 2013.
